Amazon App Store for Android logoNot long after last Friday’s launch of the Amazon AppStore for Android and subsequent blockade of AT&T customers, AT&T has confirmed that it is indeed working with Amazon to allow AT&T customers to access the third-party storefront.

The recent change of stance from AT&T is a welcome change from its previous anti-3rd party app stance on Android, even going as far as disabling sideloading and forcing customers to use cumbersome workarounds to load non Market apps, as AT&T forces all branded devices to use the Android Market.

The reasoning given by AT&T for the third-party blockade and subsequent nixing of sideloading of apps is one of security concerns and customer protection, but the concerns ring hollow in the face of previous anti-enthusiast practices instigated by the carrier, such as the forced tethering plan debacle on all rooted smart devices.

On AT&T android phones, Settings > Applications > Unknown Sources setting is absent from the menu. /Whether or not AT&T allows Amazon Market installs, unless they unconditionally enable this option (sideloading) I will NOT buy an Android phone from them.

I can’t believe how draconian and restrictive their Terms Of Service is getting. It’s enough to make you want the givernment to nationalize and subsidize the whole stinking telecomm mess in this country.

@ Jim

I feel your pain, at SPRINT they want me to drop my plan, so I can get another Smartphone, even though I have been on Smartphones for almost 5 years with this plan!

It is truly disgusting, however “the government to nationalize and subsidize the whole stinking telecomm mess in this country.” is not going to happen, due to our capitalistic system, the closest we will ever come to it, is that U.S. Congress passes a “Cellular-Telecom Consumer Rights Act”, which I have been advocating since 2007, if you reall VZW lobbied for years against “number portability”, until at last legislation was passed.

We need a Consumer rights advocasy entity, with teeth to bite!

Thank You

Google will be increasing its control over the Android platform in order to reduce and eliminate fragmentation across carriers and manufacturers after years of allowing the aforementioned to do as they saw fit, which has lead to problems with device support and carrier customizations that have hampered customer satisfaction.

According to the report filed by Bloomberg Businessweek, Google has been meeting with its key OHA partners over the past few months and laid down the law regarding its policies and has decided to exercise more control over the platform due to manufacturers and carriers modifying Android to suit their own ends without keeping support or customer satisfaction in mind. In one example, Verizon’s Galaxy S variant in the Fascinate features Android, but defaults all search traffic to Microsoft’s Bing due to a carrier agreement with the software giant, with no option to restore Google’s own Search without rooting.

This has led those same carriers and manufacturers to lodge complaints with the Justice Department  arguing that they should still be able to implement Android as needed and that Google is attempting to change the terms of the agreement. For its part, Google has responded by stating that the OHA members agreed to these policies when signing up to support Android and is now implementing those policies after seeing the direction of the platform.

This means that any carrier or manufacturer that wishes to receive the latest Android builds will now have to submit plans directly to Andy Rubin and the rest of the core Android team before receiving access to those builds, in effect closing the platform to Google’s mandates and disallowing previous degrees of carrier and manufacturer customization, which representatives from both say will harm differentiation and lead to near identical devices.

This also follows Google’s recent announcement that it would delay the public release of Android Honeycomb source code and restrict the current version to major hardware manufacturers, also closing out smaller manufacturers and developers from the latest Android build.

I don’t know how this plays into google being an open os but I think in the long run it will be better. Less fragmentation means better and more stable os on the phones and manufacturers that qualify. I myself only use htc phones but it would be good if it was stable all across the board.

iPhone 4 and TypeTop Rotary practical case Mini Bluetooth keyboard review

We wrote a little article on this product and now we have it in our hands for review, the product is the TypeTop Swivel Mini Bluetooth Keyboard & Case for the iPhone 4 and we will give you the hands-on review to help you decide if this is a product is for you or not. (Previous Article)

We will give you a few details on first impressions, design, what it feels like, ease of use, and much more, please grab yourself a drink and read on to see what we think of this iPhone 4 accessory, we will also give you our final summary and many photos that we have taken for your viewing pleasure.

First Impressions

When we received the TypeTop Swivel Mini Bluetooth iPhone 4 Keyboard and case we thought it looked ok but a little on the bulky side, it looks good enough and can see some practicality in using it. However, is it a product that you would keep an iPhone 4 fitted at all times whilst carrying around on a daily basis?

The Design

The design is very nice and has a top quality feel, it is not horrible to touch where you get that tacky plastic far from it. It has a nice feel, solid and sturdy whilst holding in your hands. The swivel hinge works very well indeed giving you a 360 degree turn, which is beneficial for holding and supporting any angle you please.

The Key Features

The swivel design allows many angels so that the iPhone 4 keyboard and the smartphone and can be used to satisfy your needs, if you feel like chatting on FaceTime you can swivel the iPhone 4 round so that the iPhone 4 is facing you whilst in stand-up mode, Full QWERTY keyboard is brilliant to type on, the keyboard has a built-in battery and that means the iPhone 4 battery is not under any loss and the case has all the cut-outs for all ports, buttons and cameras.

Bluetooth and Pairing

Pairing the iPhone 4 with the keyboard is very simple indeed, take the keyboard out of the case and on the back of the side you will see a mini USB port and a switch, just turn that switch on. Turn on the Bluetooth on your iPhone 4 by going into settings then General and then turn Bluetooth on, once you have done this go back to the keyboard and on the top you will see a light and to the right of that you will see a little press button (Press it), the iPhone will then prompt you with a pairing code, use the keyboard numbers to punch in the code and hey presto you are up and running.

Battery Life

The Bluetooth keyboard that we received via mobilefun.co.uk has its own battery and that means it will not use the iPhone 4 battery at all, the battery in the keyboard is rechargeable via the mini USB cable provided in the box.

We Used, We Liked

We put the TypeTop Swivel Mini Bluetooth Keyboard & Case through its paces and have to say was very impressed indeed, once the iPhone 4 was in the case and the keyboard was paired we held it in our hands and sent text messages, played with the volume, typed words out in safari, sent a few emails, played with the iPod like volume controls and play / pause etc. All of the above went smoothly and without any problems at all and will continue to use it, whilst on the move we used the case but when we was listening to music in our Bose docking system we docked the iPhone and took the keyboard out of the swivel case and used the keyboard on its own whilst walking around the house. Good signal at a distance of about 20 feet (Our office is not that massive, lol).

The Positive

There sometimes lurks behind dark corners positives and negatives, we will get to the negatives in a moment. On the positive side of things we really love the TypeTop Swivel Mini Bluetooth Keyboard and case because it makes texting, emailing, playing with the iPod a breeze and once used to typing on the Bluetooth keyboard it was easier than the iPhone QWERTY touchscreen, the case and keyboard feels great and very sturdy indeed and for the price it is a bargain.

The Negative

Sorry for the downside of things but sometimes you cannot have everything, the only downside is that if you hold the keyboard and case in your hands with the iPhone 4 facing you it is very nice to hold, but we tried laying it on a desk in this position to use it like a laptop so to speak and this did not work at all. The iPhone 4 is heavier than the case and keyboard together and sitting it on a desk in a laptop set-up it just fell over, you can rotate it the other way so the keyboard is at the back so you can have the iPhone 4 standing for watching videos or FaceTime.

Where to Buy and Price

You can buy the TypeTop Swivel Mini Bluetooth Keyboard and case via mobilefun.co.uk for only £34.95, we say this is a bargain price; we loved it and will use it.

Phonesreview.co.uk Overall Summary

Our overall summary of the TypeTop Swivel Mini Bluetooth Keyboard and case for the iPhone 4 works well, looks great and is very easy to use. Taking into account everything we have said above the negative side of things is not a problem at all and would recommend this iPhone 4 accessory to our readers (Obviously you buy at your own risk, your choice), but it is a good choice to make. We received, we used, we played, we loved it, it is as simple as that.(Please do watch the YouTube video courtesy of MobileFunTV below the photos. Thanks and enjoy
