Samsung Reconsiders No Android 4.0 for Tab and Galaxy S After Outcry

By Humberto Saabedra on December 27, 2011

Following the past few days where Samsung was all but set to abandon the Galaxy S and first generation Tab with the confirmation that it would not offer Ice Cream Sandwich for the devices, now comes word straight from Korea that confirms that the conglomerate has decided to reverse its position on the matter after ongoing internal discussions and increasing consumer demand.

While the reversal is surprising, it does come with a few exceptions, mainly that the versions of ICS that would be developed for both devices would be developed taking into account the hardware limitations of each device in terms of lower RAM/ROM and slower processors compared to current devices that are more than adequate for handling Android 4.0, such as the Galaxy Nexus. This means that the versions of Android 4.0 for the Galaxy S and Tab may have select features removed to better fit the devices hardware profile, but to what extent isn’t known at this time.

The initial reason for not updating the Tab and Galaxy S centered on the inability to get its TouchWiz overlay and Android 4.0 to work together without significant performance issues. It remains to be seen exactly how they will deal with that issue as well as the update cycle for both unlocked phones and the variety of carrier variants with slightly different hardware configurations.

As the Galaxy S and Tab are almost two years old, the initial consumer outcry against Samsung for not initially offering Android 4.0 on the devices was justified, as they represented sizable investments in hardware in terms of cost and any carrier agreements at the time of release for each product.

With the trend heading towards ever more compressed release cycles for Android hardware , the downside is that forced obsolescence is becoming a bigger trend for Android manufacturers and is quickly leaving a bad taste in the mouth of those that happen to purchase flagship Android phones from select manufacturers and carriers under contract, which has the side effect of making customers wary about buying from the same manufacturer in the future, due to the insecurity regarding consistent updates.

Ahead of  next week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, MetroPCS and Samsung have issued a joint announcement confirming that both companies are working together to launch the first Android smartphone with support for the ATSC M/H terrestrial broadcast standard which was ratified in 2010.

The phone will be the first phone in the US to ship with the capability to watch terrestrial digital TV broadcasts after the initial plan to launch and ratify mobile television broadcasts was first announced in 2008, but went dormant after Qualcomm’s attempts to launch its own mobile television service in MediaFLO were seen as preferred until Qualcomm decided to transition away from the initiative after years of losses and low subscriber counts, culminating in the sale of the 700MHz spectrum previously used for MediaFLO to AT&T late last month.

The service will be powered by the Dyle consortium of broadcasters with service and coverage over more than half of the total population in the US through 72 stations in 32 markets, with initial launch markets to consist of New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Dallas, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Houston, Detroit, Tampa, Phoenix, Minneapolis, Orlando, Portland, Cincinnati, Greenville, West Palm Beach, Birmingham and Knoxville, Tennessee.

Mobile television in the US has had a history of stops, starts and stillborn product development going all the way back to 2007 when carriers such as Sprint and AT&T were testing everything from MediaFLO to standard ATSC transceivers to 3G streaming and even the Euro/Asian preferred DVB-H broadcast standards before eventually settling on 3G streaming and MediaFLO respectively, which had their own set of issues such as poor video quality, high costs for both data services and additional monthly fees for subscriptions, which led to low adoption rates and high maintenance costs for carriers.

Qualcomm’s MediaFLO ended up being launched by Verizon in 2008 followed by AT&T in 2009 and was plagued by low customer adoption rates and high costs, as the service required both a data plan and an additional monthly subscription fee. To add to the confusion, while the services launched by Verizon and AT&T were the same on the technical and hardware level, both carriers had their own set of exclusive channels on the service, which did little more than annoy users and customers in practice and was done in order to drive customers to each respective service with the promise of exclusive content.

In a last ditch effort to make its service marketable to consumers during 2009-2010 before its eventual decision to kill the service and sell the spectrum, Qualcomm even attempted to sell its own hardware for MediaFLO which was manufactured by HTC and spent millions on a failed marketing blitz which included heavy sponsorship during sporting events, heavy spending on commercials during events such as ESPN’s X Games and NFL football games, even going as far as having former NFL on Fox commentator James Brown tout Qualcomm’s failed MediaFLO Mobile TV as being perfect for watching football on the go during CES in 2010.

While the adoption of mobile television using existing standards and technology may prove to be a key difference from other failed initiatives, Metro’s attempt will need to take lessons from MediaFLO if it actually intends for the service to be successful.

It has already made the wise move of deploying it with an Android handset, which raises the possibility of it being equipped with LTE, but it must also price access inline with the average monthly bill per customer on the carrier keeping in mind that its own plans go no higher than $60 a month before additional fees for more profitable add-ons. Should this attempt to launch mobile television in the US prove successful, the larger carriers may take notice and decide to develop their own products around Mobile DTV, especially as carriers look to move as much data intensive activity off of increasingly strained data networks to other alternatives.

The new service and phone will be demonstrated next week at the Consumer Electronics Show from the 10th-13th.

Report: Samsung Now Considering “Value Pack” Update for Galaxy S and Tab

By Humberto Saabedra on December 28, 2011

Various reports filtering out of Korea today are now reporting that in lieu of a full fledged update to Android 4.0 for the Galaxy S and Tab, Samsung is considering a “Value Pack” Update for both devices which would add many of the new features such as improved multitasking and widgets, but would forgo an actual update to the operating system.

Such attempts at “hybrid updates” are not new for Samsung, with its similar attempt for the same type of update for its own Bada OS handsets, but the manufacturer has a history of botching such updates with the most famous example being the T-Mobile Behold II.

As our founding editor alluded to, Samsung originally slated the Behold II for an update to Android 2.0 when the operating system was in its final development stages at the same time that the phone was being released on T-Mobile in 2009.

After months of anticipation and no real response regarding the issue, owners made threats to file a class-action lawsuit after being promised Android 2.0 by Samsung and only being given 1.6 with the Swype keyboard and Google Maps with Navigation. With this latest news, Samsung may be heading for a repeat of the same situation and more cold comfort will be given to those that were hoping for Android 4.0 on the Galaxy S and Tab.

Deal: Virgin Mobile MiFi 2200 – $49.99 Shipped

By Christopher Price on December 30, 2011

Virgin Mobile MiFi 2200 by NovatelToday, Amazon.com is offering the Virgin Mobile version of the Novatel MiFi 2200 portable hotspot for $49.99. Shipping is free.

At $100 off the standard retail price, it is the lowest price we’ve ever seen for the MiFi on Virgin Mobile.

The only downside of the the Amazon offer is that the Wal-mart version of the device offers a $20/month, 1GB data plan, which is not available on MiFi’s sold from other retail outlets. The non-Walmart versions of the device offer a $20/month, 500MB plan instead, in addition to the $50/month unlimited (albeit, throttled after 2.5GB) plan.

With Virgin Mobile now offering a $10, 100MB data plan, the $50 price point is very attractive as an emergency backup connection solution. It is the lowest price for a Sprint 3G or Sprint MVNO mobile broadband card on prepaid service that we have seen offered from a direct retailer.

The Virgin Mobile MiFi operates on Sprint’s CDMA EV-DO Rev A, 3G network.
