Report: Samsung Now Considering “Value Pack” Update for Galaxy S and Tab

By Humberto Saabedra on December 28, 2011

Various reports filtering out of Korea today are now reporting that in lieu of a full fledged update to Android 4.0 for the Galaxy S and Tab, Samsung is considering a “Value Pack” Update for both devices which would add many of the new features such as improved multitasking and widgets, but would forgo an actual update to the operating system.

Such attempts at “hybrid updates” are not new for Samsung, with its similar attempt for the same type of update for its own Bada OS handsets, but the manufacturer has a history of botching such updates with the most famous example being the T-Mobile Behold II.

As our founding editor alluded to, Samsung originally slated the Behold II for an update to Android 2.0 when the operating system was in its final development stages at the same time that the phone was being released on T-Mobile in 2009.

After months of anticipation and no real response regarding the issue, owners made threats to file a class-action lawsuit after being promised Android 2.0 by Samsung and only being given 1.6 with the Swype keyboard and Google Maps with Navigation. With this latest news, Samsung may be heading for a repeat of the same situation and more cold comfort will be given to those that were hoping for Android 4.0 on the Galaxy S and Tab.

Samsung Developing Signal Loss Update for Samsung Epic 4G Touch

By Humberto Saabedra on November 30, 2011

Sprint Samsung Epic Touch 4GA Samsung developer has confirmed to an Epic 4G Touch owner that the manufacturer is in the final stages of finalizing a new update for the phone that is intended to fix a long-standing issue with the phone, whereby the phone would struggle to maintain a steady signal in spotty coverage areas.

I have been having problems since I bought this phone with LoS and had been having bad customer service to the extreme which I won’t go into here.

A couple of days ago I did an executive email bomb (not the dan@icouldgive address, but their actual email addresses). Bob Johnson, the customer service top guy at Sprint personally called to apologize to me at 9pm at night. After I explained the issue, he said he would research the issue and get back to me. A top Samsung dev called me today who said he had spoke to Bob and informed me that an update was due in December. He offered to push the update to my phone now but said it was still in testing, so I declined.

He explained the cause of the issue to me. It is isolated to areas with spotty coverage, which is why some don’t experience it at all. If you are in 4g and leave 4g coverage, or in 3g coverage and leave 3g coverage, and in the process of sending packets, there is apparently a bug where the phone does not detect this and would just give up after it could no longer talk to the old tower.

As the issue is isolated to areas with sporadic coverage and areas where 3G and 4G coverage do not seamlessly overlap, the issue affects a minority of users, but is considered an issue worthy of investigation and further development to fix. What is not known, is whether the update will include other fixes for other longstanding issues, such as battery life issues and other problems.

HTC Flyer Honeycomb Android 3.2 Update Releasing, Gives EVO View 4G Users Hope

By Christopher Price on December 6, 2011

HTC EVO View 4G Sprint / FlyerHTC has finally confirmed and announced that it will begin releasing an Android 3.2 upgrade for the HTC Flyer, a long suspected upgrade that gave many users frustration.

The Flyer sits alongside the Dell Streak 7 as being powerful seven-inch tablets, which emerged alongside 10-inch tablets that ran on Android 3.0, aka Honeycomb. Unfortunately, Google confirmed after Android 3.0's release that the platform lacked support for smaller-screens than a 10-inch, 1024×600 pixel display could allow for. Worse, Google violated open source licenses and outright refused to release the source code; preventing others from patching Android 3.0 to run properly on seven-inch tablets.

As we saw with the Dell Streak 7, upon the release of Android 3.2, support for these small-yet-powerful tablets finally came to fruition. However, while Dell committed early to the upgrade, HTC stayed relatively quiet. Today, HTC began pushing the Flyer upgrade to European 3G variants of the Flyer, and promised to release updates for the Wi-Fi variants globally. The update will be pushed over-the-air, and will not wipe user memory.

One device remains unconfirmed however, and that is the HTC EVO View 4G, the Sprint-exclusive WiMAX-and-CDMA relative of the Flyer 3G and Flyer Wi-Fi. As we saw with Dell, the T-Mobile HSPA+ variant of the Dell Streak 7 did not get upgraded to Android 3.2, and is stuck for life at Android 2.2, Froyo. Many are concerned that the HTC EVO View 4G may suffer a similar fate. Both the Sprint EVO View 4G and T-Mobile Dell Streak 7 suffer from somewhat lackluster sales, sparked by similar constraints; high device pricing.

While T-Mobile and Dell maintained strict pricing controls on the Dell Streak 7, Sprint and HTC have been a bit more forgiving, allowing wholesalers to dump overstock of the EVO View 4G onto the market for nearly at-cost pricing, as low as $239 in fire sales, and $289 in sustained sales pricing. Sprint has also rolled out a 1 GB Tablet Data Plan which we covered and took advantage of recently.

Google recently released the source code to all versions of Honeycomb, alongside the release of source code for Android 4, Ice Cream Sandwich. Honeycomb is significantly more in-line with Android 4 than Android 2 versions, as Android 4/ICS is built off of Honeycomb. For tablet owners, Honeycomb is a major improvement over Android 2.0, which was designed strictly for cell phones, and Android 3.0 was designed strictly for tablets. Android 4 unifies this experience, with one platform designed for both smartphone and tablet. Android 4 however does this as the cost of lower-end device support; Android 4 requires much of the hardware that tablets, and powerful smartphones share, and generally will not perform properly on low-end devices without both custom designs, and major reengineering.

By Humberto Saabedra on October 20, 2011

Motorola Droid BionicMotorola representatives have confirmed that another recent Android smartphone in their lineup will be updated to Ice Cream Sandwich in 2012 along with their latest flagship in the Droid RAZR. In a conversation on Facebook Motorola has confirmed that it will update the Droid Bionic to Ice Cream Sandwich, with more specific details such as rollout scheduling and timing to be confirmed.

As the latest Android update continues to make its presence felt after first being announced earlier this week, more and more manufacturers are confirming plans to update phones to the new version of Android, though others, such as HTC are taking a more measured approach and refusing to immediately confirm plans to release hardware or updates at this time.

If you currently have the root access, and use the epic app free WiFi Bsblm, requires that you apply the update 2.2 you root device?

On 23 December price Christopher: 13 1 2010

Each update, replacing the kernel usually require re-rooting. No, you must upgrade g 4 epic, if root-until this new firmware allows the roots, wanted.

Otherwise, if you are updating will be lost the ability to have a reasonable basis in the future probably. Android 2.2.1 was released is rooted especially deterrence.
