Motorola Rolling Out Android 4.0 for Xoom Wi-Fi

By Humberto Saabedra on January 18, 2012

Motorola Xoom

The second tablet to receive the long awaited Android 4.0 update will be Motorola’s Xoom Wi-Fi tablet, with the update being pushed out as an OTA update.

The update pushes the software version to IML77 and takes full advantage of the new operating system, being that the Xoom was the reference device for the previous Android version in Android Honeycomb. The update is also notable for being available pre-rooted for those looking to maintain such access for maximum customization options and functionality not yet available officially on stock Android 4.0 or as the gateway to custom ROMs. of which many are also available.

While this update does signal that life does remain in the original Motorola Xoom, what is not yet known is whether the same updates will be provided to the LTE version of the tablet.

When the tablet was initially announced last January, the hardware and sales copy indicated compatibility with Verizon’s then new LTE network, but the actual tablet was not capable of accessing the then new network at its launch in February.  The initial plan was for Verizon to launch the Xoom LTE without the LTE hardware in order to avoid lengthy delays while Motorola prepared the LTE modules for a late Spring/early Summer 2011 launch.

However, additional delays in LTE hardware production ironically forced more delays on the intended free upgrade program past the initial timeframe, to the point that Verizon was forced to relaunch the tablet in October of 2011 with the LTE hardware included in order to drive already slow sales, while the upgrade program for those that bought the Xoom LTE at launch wasn’t completed until later that month, almost six months after its original upgrade timeframe was first announced.

Now with the availability of the Droid Xyboard/Xoom 2 in Verizon’s lineup, it remains to be seen whether the carrier will bother updating the Xoom LTE, as they can be easily found on the myriad of deal-a-day websites for an average of 30-40% off of their MSRP while Verizon slowly moves away from supporting the tablet in favor of newer tablets.

Of course, this also raises the question of what kind of carrier support can be expected for tablets in general, as T-Mobile abandoned support for its version of the Dell Streak 7 due to low sales while Dell continuously updated its Wi-Fi only versions.

With carriers continuously releasing Android tablets in order to compete in the marketplace with more power and more features at the expense of low overall sales and lower consumer awareness, long-term support means the difference between having a satisfied customer base that would be willing to buy more from that carrier and having people completely skip over an entire product line.

Unfortunately, with the compressed development and release cycles that have become the norm for Android smartphones and tablets, having timely consistent updates being made available for older devices are now a much lower priority for carriers than developing and selling new devices with new features, as evidenced by the launch of the Droid Xyboard series shortly after the relaunch of the Xoom 4G, despite the Xyboard 10.1 and Xoom 4G being priced identically.

News on Motorola XT928

Chinese Motorola XT928 aka Verizon Droid X3 specs » Phone Reviews All NewsiPhoneBlackBerryAndroidHTCLGMotorolaSamsungSony EricssonNokiaVideo   Add Mark Chubb (Phones Review CEO) to your Circles on Google+Chinese Motorola XT928 aka Verizon Droid X3 specsUnder: Motorola, Verizon
Date: December 6th, 2011

About a week ago, we at Phones Review were keen to fill you in on news that had come through, surrounding a new Motorola XT928 ready to be released through China Telecom. At that time, we gave you information on its specs and proposed release date, but today judging by the news, the XT928 may in fact also be coming to Verizon but using a different brand name.

Compared to Motorola’s Droid RAZR, specs were similar barr the slide-out keyboard that the new XT928 was reported to include. Marketed as a “phone inside a camera,” the XT928 according to Phandroid.com, was carrying notable features such as being thicker in appearance, no carbon fiber or Kevlar materials, therefore giving it a comparison to the Droid X above anything else.

Other features of the new XT928 include, the user being able to source the battery through the removable cover, therefore allowing the phone to be used through batteries along with a 4.5-inch 720p display giving it a slight edge over and above the Droid RAZR. If the new XT928 which is due to be released some time this month in China does actually come to the big red US carrier Verizon, then sources are saying that it may include a name change to that of the new Droid X3 enjoying Verizon benefits of its 4G LTE network.

With Verizon currently stirring up the smartphone market with some new devices, is the supposed Droid X3 something that you would consider? Just before we go, word is that the new Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus will be officially releasing now on December 9th if this is something you’ve been waiting for?

News on Motorola ET1

Motorola ET1 enterprise tablet designed for business » Phone Reviews All NewsiPhoneBlackBerryAndroidHTCLGMotorolaSamsungSony EricssonNokiaVideo   Add Mark Chubb (Phones Review CEO) to your Circles on Google+Motorola ET1 enterprise tablet designed for businessUnder: Tablet PC
Date: December 6th, 2011

There’s a new Android tablet coming out in the big wide tablet space from Motorola and is the world’s first enterprise slate and is called the Motorola ET1 tablet and is a rugged slate with specified features to differentiate the business orientated tablet from consumer Android slates.

According to an article over on Money Web, the Motorola ET1 tablet will run the Android operating system albeit not stating which Android OS, that will enable multiple logins which will ensure several staff will have access to certain information.

The Motorola ET1 will sport a 7-inch Gorilla Glass display along with 1GB on-board memory, a USB port and initially be a WiFi only tablet although a 3G version will come at a later date, other than that no other specs on the device have been given.

According to the distribution and partner’s manager for enterprise business at Motorola, Max Stone, the Motorola ET1 has been designed for the knowledgeable worker, someone that requires access to multiple apps whilst making enhanced decisions.

Apparently Motorola has been working with numerous independent software vendors for developing apps for enterprises including item locators, mobile point of sale and assisted selling.

Mark Kelly, the MD of Motorola South Africa says that the launch of the Motorola ET1 is part of their initiative to “expand in Africa,” so one can presume that the ET^1 is launching in South Africa although it isn’t clear if the Android slate will launch anywhere else.

As for the price of the Motorola ET1 enterprise tablet the device will retail for a rather hefty $1535, which is approximately R12280.

Motorola Droid BionicMotorola representatives have confirmed that another recent Android smartphone in their lineup will be updated to Ice Cream Sandwich in 2012 along with their latest flagship in the Droid RAZR. In a conversation on Facebook Motorola has confirmed that it will update the Droid Bionic to Ice Cream Sandwich, with more specific details such as rollout scheduling and timing to be confirmed.

As the latest Android update continues to make its presence felt after first being announced earlier this week, more and more manufacturers are confirming plans to update phones to the new version of Android, though others, such as HTC are taking a more measured approach and refusing to immediately confirm plans to release hardware or updates at this time.

Droid RAZR AT&T Unlocked and up for pre-order » Phone Reviews All NewsiPhoneBlackBerryAndroidHTCLGMotorolaSamsungSony EricssonNokiaVideo   Add Mark Chubb (Phones Review CEO) to your Circles on Google+Droid RAZR AT&T Unlocked and up for pre-orderUnder: Google Android, Mobile Phones, Motorola
Date: October 24th, 2011

As you probably know the latest Android beast of a smartphone from the Motorola camp and the latest addition to the Droid family of handsets and sporting the famous RAZR name is the new Motorola Droid RAZR, and the word is the Motorola Droid RAZR will be hitting the Big Red at some point commanding a price tag of $300, but if you don’t wish to go with Verizon for the Droid RAZR there is another option.

According to the guys over at Ubergizmo, the Motorola Droid RAZR sound be coming to AT&T at some stage, but if you want to grab the Android smartphone as an unlocked handset on AT&T the guys over at Mobile City Online have the device up for pre-order.

Apparently the unlocked Motorola Droid RAZR is a GSM version although it does tout GSM and WCDMA bands, although if you do prefer the unlocked Droid RAZR the device will hit your pocket for a hefty $599.99.

Specs for the Motorola Droid RAZR are, a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Advanced qHD Gorilla glass touch screen, 8 megapixel rear facing camera, HD front facing camera, 1080p video, Bluetooth 4.0, 1.2GHz dual core processor, Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread OS, 4G LTE connectivity, 1GB RAM, 32GB memory made up of 16GB internal and 16GB preinstalled microSD card.

If you are still sitting on the fence with the Motorola Droid RAZR, we posted a quick hand-on video previously, which you can check out by hitting up (here).

I figure the thing is if you really don’t wish to commit to the usual two-year contract then perhaps 600 bucks isn’t too high a price to shell out, although if you don’t mind that commitment you could hold off to see what AT&T offers the Droid RAZR for on contract.

Are you waiting to get your hands on the Motorola Droid RAZR, if so will you be opting for a contract or unlocked model? Feel free to let us know by dropping us a comment below.
